Julie Phillips
Social Work Assistant, Children’s Home
“I hope people know it’s okay to ask for help and know where to seek help when they need it. #donotfeelpaiseh.”
Julie is a single mother with 2 children, and has lived in Ang Mo Kio since 2017. She is currently a social work assistant at a children’s home and has been a volunteer at Allkin Singapore since 2019. She started her volunteering journey at Family Service Centre @ cheng San 445 by helping to pack and distribute rations to residents. After hearing from one of the residents, a fellow single mother that she was in severe need of clothes, Julie kick-started the 'Give and Take' initiative, a community donation drive for clothes, household goods, childrens’ items and other necessities by tapping on her circle of friends and mobilising other fellow residents. In 2021, Allkin Singapore awarded her the honour of being its “Most Versatile Volunteer”.
Julie finds comfort in food during times of hardship. She previously attempted to start her own food stall; sadly, she was eventually unable to sustain the business. Even with limited resources, it is important to her that her children have proper meals. Julie prides herself on knowing the best places for affordable and delicious food in Ang Mo Kio and beyond, and is also able to cook scrumptious meals for large groups of people. Beyond her passion for food, she is a dedicated carer for her 3 cats, and adores her cats to the extent that she has learned cat grooming techniques on her own. Julie finds happiness in being able to give back to the community, and her lived experiences drive her to be a source of support for others, especially single mothers and children.
