National Education Learning Journey
Discovering assets and our roles in the community
Total Defence involves every Singaporean playing a part, individually and collectively, to build a strong, secure and cohesive nation.
Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) is a model and practical approach for community development work that recognises, emphasises and utilises the various assets, both tangible and intangible, that exist in a given community.
In this learning journey, we will briefly share about Total Defence and its six pillars. We will then expose participants to various categories of assets under the ABCD framework and ways we can map these community and environmental assets. These assets would be closely linked to fostering stronger Social, Psychological and Civil Defence in our society. Our focus would be to share how we can discover and leverage the community’s strengths so as to achieve the shared outcomes of Total Defence. It is important to note that the relationships within the community are important in navigating crises and in rebuilding our nation together, as seen with the recent pandemic.
Building on that, the session will culminate with participants embarking on a virtual walkabout in Kampung Admiralty (KA) to carry out community asset-mapping with a mission brief of identifying assets that exemplify the Social, Psychological and Civil Defence within the community.
We hope that through this learning journey, it will help participants in identifying and discovering the gifts within and around them, leading to a greater appreciation of their community and Singapore. We also hope that participants will discover their roles in Total Defence and how they can contribute as individuals to Singapore, especially during a period of crisis i.e. the recent COVID-19 pandemic.
Here are what some of our participants who experienced the NE Virtual Learning Journey shared
ASSETS IN ACTION LEARNING JOURNEY
This learning journey takes participants on a community walk at either Kampung Admiralty or Our Tampines Hub based on the chosen theme, (1) Ageing-in-Place or (2) Environmental Sustainability. At each location, participants will understand and identify the different capitals that represent the different themes.
Kampung Admiralty (Theme: Ageing-in-place)
Kampung Admiralty (KA) is Singapore’s first integrated vertical kampung designed specifically for the nation’s ageing population. In this learning journey, participants will explore KA and learn how urban infrastructures / facilities are designed to reflect the changing needs of society, either to pre-empt potential challenges or as a solution to address a current challenge i.e. ageing population. We will then close with an activity where participants will engage in a conversation with a community member on their perceptions of KA. A short debrief and reflection will conclude the end of the learning journey.
Our Tampines Hub (Theme: Sustainability)
Our Tampines Hub (OTH) is Singapore’s first and largest integrated community & lifestyle hub. It represents a new model of community-focused development. In this learning journey, participants will explore OTH and learn how urban infrastructures / facilities are designed to reflect the changing needs of society, either to pre-empt potential challenges or as a solution to address a current challenge i.e. sustainability. A short debrief and reflection will conclude the end of the learning journey.
